Apatite is a phosphate mineral composed of calcium phosphate (Ca₅(PO₄)₃(OH, F, Cl)), and it comes in a variety of colors, with green being one of the most desirable. Green Apatite stands out for its brilliant, transparent, or translucent green hue, which can range from pale mint green to a deep forest green. The green color comes from the presence of trace amounts of iron and manganese within the mineral. Apatite is a complex phosphate mineral, and its chemical formula can vary depending on the presence of different elements like fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), or hydroxyl (OH) in the crystal structure. Green Apatite specifically contains fluorapatite, where fluorine is dominant.

The word Apatite is derived from the Greek word “apate” meaning deceit because apatite can be mistaken for many other minerals. Apatite forms under a wide variety of conditions and is found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Green Apatite is found in several parts of the world, with some localities being more famous for producing high-quality specimens of this gemstone including Brazil, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia and the United States.

Apatite has important applications in the chemical, farming, and pharmaceutical industries. The primary Apatite group includes Fluorapatite, Chlorapatite, and Hydroxylapatite. The extended Apatite supergroup describes additional minerals like Pyromorphite, Mimetite, and Vanadinite. Apatites are commonly sold as “Apatite” without a designation of the specific type because its difficult to identify between the types. We can assume most of these stones are Fluorapatite, as it is the most common.

Apatite can form as a secondary mineral in cooling volcanic rocks or from the crystallization of magma in granite. In these environments, high-temperature fluids rich in phosphates and fluorine cause the apatite crystals to form. Green Apatite is also found in hydrothermal veins, where it crystallizes from hot, mineral-rich water that percolates through cracks in the Earth's crust. This can happen in volcanic areas or in regions with significant geothermal activity. In some cases, Apatite can form through the metamorphism of phosphatic rocks, where high heat and pressure cause the minerals to recrystallize into more stable forms, often incorporating trace amounts of iron and manganese to produce the green color.
