Moissanite is an extremely rare mineral, composed of silicon carbide. Found only in some meteorites and kimberlites (upper mantle rock), natural Moissanite is extremely rare. Moissanite was discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan while examining rock samples from a meteor crater in Canyon Diablo, Arizona. He first mistakenly identified the crystals as diamonds, but in 1904 he determined the crystals were silicon carbide. It was named in 1905 in his honor.

Moissanites are often used as an alternative to Diamonds for engagement and wedding rings because of their incredible brilliance. Moissanite is more brilliant than a diamond! In gemology, brilliance means a stone’s ability to reflect white light and is a good indicator for how much a gemstone will sparkle.
