Red Jasper is a variety of Jasper, with rich red color. Red Jasper forms typically in sedimentary and metamorphic environments. It develops when silica-rich solutions permeate through sediments, which later harden into solid rock. The red coloration is due to iron oxide (Hematite) within the silica matrix. Over time, layers of silica are deposited, forming the solid, dense structure characteristic of jasper. Red Jasper is found in various areas across the globe with notable deposits in Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa and the United States.

Jasper is the name for a brightly colored, solid or patterned, opaque microcrystalline quartz. Flint and Chert are also names for opaque microcrystalline quartz but these have muted or neutral colors. Stones used to make tools were typically called Flint.
