Green Moonstone is a green variety of Moonstone valued for its soft coloration and distinctive adularescence, the floating sheen that appears to move beneath the surface as the stone is rotated in light. Like other Moonstones, Green Moonstone belongs to the feldspar family and is composed of intergrown feldspar minerals whose internal structure produces its characteristic optical effect. The trade name Green Moonstone is used for material from several localities, and mineralogical composition may vary somewhat between sources. Specimens displaying adularescence are generally classified within the feldspar group and share the optical characteristics associated with traditional Moonstone.

Green Moonstone forms within igneous and metamorphic environments where feldspar minerals crystallize and cool over extended periods of geological time. Most material occurs as massive aggregates rather than well-formed crystals and is commonly fashioned into cabochons to best display its optical properties. Feldspar minerals crystallize in the monoclinic or triclinic crystal systems depending on composition, and their intergrowth structure is responsible for the visual effects that make Moonstone recognizable.

Its coloration ranges from pale mint green and soft celadon to deeper shades of green. Luster is typically vitreous to pearly, while transparency ranges from translucent to nearly opaque. The most distinctive feature of Green Moonstone is adularescence, an optical phenomenon created when light scatters between microscopic intergrowths of feldspar minerals. As the stone moves, this internal scattering produces a floating sheen that appears to glide beneath the surface.
