Amethyst is the February birthstone and the 6th and 17th anniversary stones. It is the purple variety of Quartz. Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon and oxygen, with a chemical composition of SiO₂. All other varieties of Quartz, such as yellow Citrine, green Praisolite, or pink Rose Quartz are colored due to tiny inclusions in the silica. The gorgeous purple color of Amethyst is due to inclusions of iron in the crystal structure.

Peridot often occurs in volcanic rocks called basalts, which are rich in iron and magnesium. Peridot is also found in pallasite meteorites (made of nickel-iron and olivine, are 4.5 billion years old!) and deep within the Earth's mantle. Its chemical composition includes iron and magnesium, with its beautiful green color caused by iron. The word “peridot” comes from the Arabic word “faridat” meaning “gem”.
