Kunzite is lithium aluminum silicate mineral and the most well-known variety of the mineral Spodumene. Spodumene is a pyroxene mineral typically found in lithium-rich pegmatites. It commonly forms with other lithium minerals such as Lepidolite, Eucryptite, and Petalite. Kunzite gets its beautiful pastel color from trace amounts of manganese. Kunzite was first discovered in Connecticut, USA, and named after George Frederick Kunz, an American mineralogist and former Vice President and buyer for Tiffany & Company who first described the gem Kunzite in 1902. Primary sources of Kunzite are Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Madagascar, Myanmar and the USA. Kunzite is highly sought after in jewelry because of its pleochroism (meaning it displays a different color when viewed from different angles).

Kunzite forms in pegmatitic veins, which are typically found in granite or schist formations. These veins are the result of the cooling and crystallization of magma that contains trace elements such as lithium, which are crucial in the formation of Kunzite.
