Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a variety of chalcedony, which is a type of microcrystalline quartz. It typically consists of dark green chalcedony with red or brown spots or streaks of iron oxide or hematite. The green color comes from chlorite or other minerals within the chalcedony. Bloodstone is known for its striking and distinctive spotted appearance resembling drops of blood, hence its name. It has been used historically for its associations with blood and healing.

Chalcedony precipitates from silica-rich solutions that permeate through cracks and voids in rocks, often during hydrothermal activity. The red spots or streaks in Bloodstone are typically hematite or iron oxide inclusions.
