Chiastolite, also known as Andalusite or Cross Stone, is a variety of the mineral Andalusite (Al2SiO5) that contains carbonaceous inclusions. It belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system and typically forms prismatic crystals with a distinctive cross-shaped pattern when viewed in cross-section. Chiastoltie's enchanting cross is caused by inclusions that often appear as dark, parallel rods or fibers that intersect at right angles, giving Chiastolite its characteristic appearance. The cross-shaped pattern of chiastolite is formed by carbonaceous material, often graphite or coal, that replaces parts of the andalusite crystal lattice during metamorphism.

The name "Chiastolite" is derived from the Greek word "Chiastos" meaning "Cross". It refers to the characteristic cross-shaped pattern that is visible in its crystals when viewed in cross-section. Chiastolite is primarily formed during regional metamorphism of clay-rich sediments or pelitic rocks that contain aluminum and silica.
