Scolecite is a mineral in the zeolite group, and is closely related to Natrolite and Mesolite. It is a calcium aluminosilicate mineral with the chemical formula CaAl2Si3O10·3H2O. Scolecite forms in volcanic bubbles called vesicles along with other zeolites. Sometimes chemical analysis is needed to determine if a specimen is Natrolite or Scolecite; even a single crystal may contain part of each mineral within different zones of the same crystal. The mineral is known for its fibrous crystal structure, and when viewed under magnification, the crystals often resemble delicate hair-like filaments, which is one of the key features that makes scolecite so distinctive.
