Galaxy Opal is a trade name used for a rare and visually arresting form of Opal that displays deep brown, black, or chocolate-toned body color scattered with pinfire flashes and star-like iridescence, creating the illusion of a night sky filled with distant galaxies. Unlike crystalline minerals, Opal is amorphous, meaning it does not form in a repeating lattice structure. Instead, it is composed of microscopic silica spheres suspended in hydrated silica gel. These spheres diffract light, producing opalescence. In Galaxy Opal, the spacing and layering of these silica spheres allow light to scatter in multiple directions, creating a depth effect that feels expansive and multidimensional.
