Gaspeite is a nickel carbonate mineral, rich in magnesium, and is known for its distinct bright green color. Its chemical formula is (Ni, Mg)CO₃, which reflects its composition primarily of nickel, magnesium, and carbon. While Gaspeite was first discovered in the early 20th century, it wasn’t until the 1970s that Gaspeite gained attention when it was found in abundance in the Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec, Canada. Due to its specific formation conditions and limited occurrence, Gaspeite is considered quite rare, especially in high-quality gem material. The main source of gem-grade Gaspeite is still found in the Gaspe Peninsula, however the supply is limited, so the stone remains highly coveted.

Gaspeite forms in nickel-rich geological environments, typically in serpentinized ultramafic rocks. These rocks are rich in minerals like olivine and pyroxene and are often found in areas with high levels of nickel. Gaspeite is usually a secondary mineral, which means it forms from the alteration of other minerals through processes like weathering, hydrothermal activity, or chemical reactions with fluids circulating through the earth. It is often associated with other nickel-bearing minerals, such as Garnierite, which is another nickel silicate. The mineral forms in small, granular, or compact aggregates.
