Tugtupite, also known as "Reindeer Stone" is one of the rarest minerals in the world, known for its striking pink color and historical significance to the Inuit people! It belongs to the feldspathoid group, which is known for its unique compositions and crystal structures. Tugtupite is closely related to sodalite and has a complex structure composed of sodium, aluminum, beryllium, silicon, oxygen, and chlorine. It's stunning red-pink color is caused by inclusions of magnesium in the crystal structure.

Tugtupite holds enchanting optical properties, including tenebrescence, fluorescence, and phosphorescence. Tenebrescence is the ability of minerals to change or darken in color when exposed to light. Tugtupite is strongly tenebrescent with colors changing from white or light pink, to vivid red and even purple-red. The color changes within minutes, when exposed to sunlight, short-wave or long-wave ultraviolet light. Tugtupite fluorescences under ultraviolet (UV) light, glowing bright orange to pink fluorescence. Lack of daylight during the long arctic winter causes Tugtupite to naturally lose its color, returning to white or very light pink. Tugtupite is also called "Tuktu", a name derived from the Greenlandic Inuit word for reindeer (tuttu). The primary locality for Tugtupite is the Tugtup locality in Greenland, specifically the Tugtupbaneq area. This region is known for its complex geology and rare mineral deposits.
