Mohawkite is a copper-arsenic rock that forms as a result of the interaction between copper-rich ores and the surrounding environment. It is known for its distinctive metallic luster and unique combination of metallic minerals, including copper (Cu), arsenic (As), and cobalt (Co), along with traces of other metals like nickel and iron. Mohawkite is recognized for its reddish-brown to bronze-colored appearance, often exhibiting a shiny, metallic sheen.

The name Mohawkite is derived from the location where it was first discovered: the Mohawk Mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The Mohawk Mine was one of the most important copper mines in the region, operating from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s. The discovery of Mohawkite in this region led to its naming after the mine, solidifying the connection between the mineral and the site. The name "Mohawkite" was officially adopted in the mid-20th century when the mineral was recognized as distinct from other copper arsenide minerals. It is now used to refer to any mineral found in other locations that shares the same distinctive characteristics, though the name is most closely tied to the discovery in Michigan.

Mohawkite forms as a secondary mineral in copper-bearing deposits that have been subjected to the influence of arsenic or arsenic-bearing fluids. Mohawkite forms in the veins of copper-rich deposits, particularly in areas where copper ores are exposed to weathering processes. As the copper reacts with arsenic and other volatile elements in the environment, it precipitates out of the solution in the form of Mohawkite. The mineral can also form in hydrothermal veins, where mineral-rich hot fluids move through cracks in the earth, carrying copper, arsenic, and other metals. As the fluids cool or interact with the surrounding rock, they deposit minerals like Mohawkite, often in small, concentrated pockets. The interaction of arsenic with sulfur compounds can lead to the creation of copper-arsenide minerals like Mohawkite.
