Sunstone is named after its resemblence to our sun, and its alternative name, Heliolite. The Spessartine variety is one of the aluminum containing members of the Garnet group with a chemical composition of Mn₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃. Garnets are a large group of rock-forming silicate minerals. Garnet is the modern & traditional January birthstone and is the second anniversary stone. Garnet is derived from the Greek word “granatum” after its striking resemblance to the seeds in a pomegranate. Spessartine Garnet was named in 1832 by François Sulpice Beudant after its type locality in the Spessart Mountains, Germany.
